She lives there with her brother Adolphus until he enters into a betrothal contract with George's mother Augusta, providing that Charlotte will become George's wife and England's next queen. The two meet on their wedding day under whimsical romantic circumstances, and they fall in love — but clearly, George is hiding something. It takes a few episodes to suss out, but if you know the story of the real George, it will not surprise you that what George is hiding is a series of very difficult struggles with his mental health — what he calls "fits." Golda Rosheuvel’s Queen Charlotte appears in both seasons of “Bridgerton,” in which she attempts matchmaking by declaring each marriage market season’s most desirable woman. In “Queen Charlotte,” we get more of her side of the story with the 13 children she has had with King George as well as her day-to-day life as the more active monarch of the ton.

[...] Many historians believe that Queen Charlotte was of mixed cultural heritage. We wanted to take that in a different direction than what the history books have said happened which was basically to bury that and not deal with it. The American actress is making her major TV role debut in Queen Charlotte but has also starred in 2021 TV series One Touch and 2022 feature film Redeeming Love. Meanwhile, the palace spins the familial integration into something the whole country can learn from and bestows honours upon other non-white members of society. Young Lady Danbury (Arsema Thomas) is particularly thrilled by this development and sets about making sure that there’s real change for people of colour in 1770s London, rather than just words. Like Adjoa Andoh’s older Lady Danbury, Thomas is a scene-stealer, consistently delivering her lines with punch and wry wit.

The actress gracefully stepped into a gold SUV, using a cane for support, with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton. She sported a white blazer adorned with intricate floral patterns, paired with a cream blouse and black trousers, accentuated by stunning blue and gold earrings. A botched vocal surgery in 1997 led to the loss of Andrews's singing voice, occasioning her refusal to sing on camera for several years.[72] Despite this, Andrews kept busy with many projects.

She liked her wigs tall and her dresses grand, and she was quite certain no one in her household appreciated the complexities of music or art as keenly as she did. Born a German Princess, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely intelligent… not precisely the attributes the British Court had been seeking in a spouse for the young King George III. But her fire and independence were exactly what she needed, because George had secrets… secrets with the potential to shake the very foundations of the monarchy. The princess is King George’s mother who essentially acts as an interim monarch before her son officially takes the throne. Despite allowing Charlotte to marry her son, the princess makes it apparent that the young queen does not have her respect. Princess Augusta also works tirelessly to ensure no one discovers her son’s secret. India Amarteifio steps into the role of Queen Charlotte in the spinoff, following Golda Rosheuvel who originated the part in “Bridgerton.” The teenage version of the queen is just as fierce but much more naive as she attempts to adapt to her new surroundings. She must quickly navigate moving to a different country, meeting her husband for the first time and being the head of a monarchy.

George and Charlotte meet for the first time about an hour before they are supposed to say “I do.” Their initial meeting shares a glimpse into the undeniable connection between the two. But George is keeping a secret from his bride that disrupts their honeymoon. The show follows 17-year-old Charlotte while also catching up with some fan-favorite “Bridgerton” characters to see how decisions in the past affected how they view love and their friendships decades later.

The King's first bout of mental illness reportedly happened in 1765 (though Queen Charlotte was kept unaware at that time). That signaled a bill that proclaimed Charlotte as Regent should the King become permanently unable to rule. Portraying a young Queen Charlotte in the Bridgerton spin-off, India Amarteifio captures the strong-willed regal as first introduced onscreen by Golda Rosheuvel.

He stars opposite India Amarteifio, who portrays the younger version of Queen Charlotte, as the series explores the pair's turbulent union and George's secret mental health illness. The cast of the prequel series is made up of Bridgerton favourites and brilliant newcomers. The friskier challenge is to do all that while still making good on the "Bridgerton" promise to deliver sexy, sumptuous, extravagantly eye-popping entertainment. On those grounds, gentle readers, you need have no doubt. Cut to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany, who is only 17 when she arrives in court with her brother Adolphus (Tunji Kasim) for an arranged marriage to George, then 23.

The actual Queen Charlotte, some historians believe, may have had some African ancestry. That conversation around Queen Sophia Charlotte’s race inspired the series, per Netflix. "This is the story of Queen Charlotte from Bridgerton," narrates Julie Andrews. "It is not a history lesson. It is fiction inspired by fact. All liberties taken by the author are quite intentional. Enjoy." Check out our guide to the best series on Netflix and best movies on Netflix, or visit our TV Guide and Streaming Guide. Maloney has appeared in some of Britain's most beloved shows including Emmerdale, Coronation Street, EastEnders and Casualty.

Shortly after Charlotte arrives in England, she learns that Brimsley, portrayed by Sam Clemmett in the flashback scenes, will be her devoted servant. Brimsley is supposed to cater to the queen’s every need and always remain exactly five paces behind her. Although Charlotte protests his presence at first, she grows to appreciate him being there whenever she needs help.

The flash-forwards let the viewer know that real love and appreciation will eventually blossom between the pair – but soon after their wedding, it becomes clear that their road to romance will be far from smooth. Perhaps more than with Charlotte, who doesn't always seem like the same person as the older Charlotte, this portrait of young Agatha feels like a persuasive story of how the woman we already know from Bridgerton became who she is. Young Agatha is trapped in an unhappy marriage, but you can see how she is on the path to a kind of independence that will make her unusual when she's older. Ruth Gemmell’s Lady Violet appears in the more recent timeline of “Bridgerton,” but she is actually much younger than Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte. She is also widowed, but she has her eight children to put through the marriage market, and so far she has successfully seen Daphne and Anthony through. Ruth Gemmell has previously appeared in “F” (2010) as Sarah Balham, “Primeval” as Katherine Kavanagh and “Fever Pitch” as Sarah Hughes.

“You are going to give me a megrim,” his mother finally said. Reynolds had arrived with the razor, and it was much more relaxing this way. Although logically speaking, one should never feel too relaxed with a razor near one’s throat. “I love the earth,” George said, thinking that explanation enough. Still, she had devoted herself to this country. Princess Augusta had birthed nine princes and princesses, all of whom spoke English as their mother tongue.

The more fanciful "Bridgerton" version depicts a parliament-launched "Great Experiment," in which land and titles are bestowed on people of color to render interracial marriage -- shades of Harry and Meghan -- no big deal. The series is a rare exception to the rule of prequels (generally substantially worse than the originals and undermining all previous endeavours) and will hopefully set many of its younger stars on the road to success. Amarteifio does especially well, shouldering the bulk of the show’s burdens and showing in embryo all of the Charlotte we know. But it’s with an innocent energy and unjaded intelligence that shows us something new too. Here not-yet-queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) is 17 and newly promised by her brother Adolphus (Tunji Kasim) to not-yet-mad-but-getting-there King George III (Corey Mylchreest). The fiances’ meet-cute takes place as she is about to hightail it over a palace wall to avoid the wedding.

She must fight—for herself, for her husband, and for all her new subjects who look to her for guidance and grace. She must instead fulfill her destiny… as Queen. Most prequels exist in some form as fan service above all else, every younger character or reference to something from the original show feels almost like an Easter Egg. Queen Charlotte is a treat for Bridgerton fans who are dedicated to the universe the books and show have developed, and seeing the younger versions of people like Lady Danbury, Brimsley, and Lady Bridgerton is rewarding.

Reynolds works to ensure the king is following his royal duties. He also works as a liaison between the king and queen when the two refuse to communicate directly. Rosheuvel also appears in “Queen Charlotte,” carrying on parts of her storyline that fans saw in “Bridgerton.” In this series, Rosheuvel continues to seemingly rule alone as her husband is mysteriously away. Rosheuvel’s Queen Charlotte isn’t simply reminiscing about the past in her scenes.
